About Us

Cockermouth Scottish Country Dance Club started in 1960 with a few friends, and blossomed into a thriving club, formerly known as Derwent SCDC. It now meets at the Methodist Church Hall, Lorton Street, Cockermouth every Thursday evening. After Covid-related delays, we finally celebrated our 60th Anniversary in 2022.

The club welcomes everyone from beginners to more experienced dancers and is taught by Angela Garrison. She has been a member of the club for over 20 years, during which time she qualified as a Scottish Country Dance teacher.

Club evenings start at 7.00 pm with a warm-up, simple formations and technique. This progresses onto simple dances and then more challenging dances as the evening goes on. There is a short social break halfway through the evening and the class finishes at 9.15pm.

The club has an affiliated class at Bassenthwaite on a Monday evening aimed at beginners and improvers. This runs from 7 pm - 9 pm at Bassenthwaite Parish Room and is taught by Marlene Jackson who is also a qualified SCD teacher.

The club, as a whole, has a healthy membership with at least 4 sets dancing at Cockermouth, and up to 3 sets at Bassenthwaite every week.

You don’t need to bring a partner or be super fit. A good sense of humour, and the ability to listen to directions are all you need to enjoy the music and movement within a friendly group.

The year runs from September to May and beginners will receive a progressive introduction to Scottish Country Dancing.

As well as the classes, there are many dances held throughout the year by ourselves and other clubs around Cumbria and further afield.

Scottish Country Dancing is social dancing at its best!

Please come and join us.
